Trailer number plate holders (also known as trailer registration plate holders) are an essential accessory that mounts onto your trailer so that your licence plate is secure and is in view to other drivers. They can come with two components and can even be made to fit different areas of your trailer.
Reasons for number plate holders
HGV trailers need their number plate to be visible at all times, especially since most are company-owned vehicles and regulations tend to be stricter. They’re important to identify the vehicle you’re driving and, without it being visible or the correct number plate, the National Highway traffic officers can pull you over and you may be fined. Identification is important so that you can prove your vehicle is safe to use on roads. Make sure yours is on display and is secure on a number plate holder with replacements available on our site to suit universal and branded trailers (Aspoeck, Featherwing, and Trucklite Rubbolite).
Materials and components
The main material that is typically used for number plate holders is galvanised steel. This is a rigid material which is heat and corrosive-resistant, with a protective coating so that it will stay looking new for a long time which makes it great for trucks that drive in all types of conditions. We spoke more about the benefits of galvanised steel in our recent blog.
The number plate can also come with an extra component – a bulb lamp. These usually have a fly lead to help connect it to the power so that it can stay lit. This is essential if you’re driving a lot in the dark.
There are two different areas on the trailer where you might need to place a number plate. On our website, we have side-loading types available so that you can have your registration number in view to vehicles at the side of you. There are also the traditional rear number plate holders which sit at the back of your trailer. The rules and regulations on the government website states that it must be in view and match the registration number of the truck. If you are towing more than one trailer, then it must be placed on the trailer at the very back.
